10am at Car park behind Stair Inn
NS440235 / KA5 5HW
This is an interesting walk that follows the course of the River Ayr as it passes through the Ayr Gorge Woodland Reserve. It offers magnificent views of the Ayrshire countryside. For the most part it follows the River Ayr Path which consists of well-marked paths. However there are several sets of steps and a section of boardwalk within the gorge. The woodland is home to a number of bird species including kingfishers, dippers and grey wagtails. Otters, badgers and deer may also be spotted. Stair, Failford and the surrounding areas are of historical interest. The walk commences and ends at the car park behind the Stair Inn. After crossing the bridge a well marked path on the right follows the River Ayr. Initially the path follows the bank of the river and then moves upwards and enters the woodland gorge. The path of the river is followed ascending and descending the gorge via steps. The path leaves the woodland at Failford which provides an ideal spot for lunch. The Failford Inn serves drinks and meals if desired. The return journey through the Woodland Reserve is via a higher, inland path that passes through the woodland and along the edge of Coilsholm Wood. On exiting the woodland the original path back to Stair is resumed.. OS708.5mile / 13.7kmModerate
